Project Lifesaver

Project Lifesaver is a program offered in Camden County, NJ, designed to help locate individuals with Alzheimer’s, autism, or related conditions who are prone to wandering. Participants wear a wristband emitting a unique radio frequency signal, which specially trained law enforcement officers can track using specialized equipment. This technology significantly reduces search times, potentially saving lives. 

How Project Lifesaver Works:

  • Transmitter:

Participants wear a wristband containing a small, battery-operated transmitter that emits a unique radio frequency signal. 

  • Tracking:

When a participant is reported missing, a specially trained team from the Camden County Sheriff’s Office responds to the last known location and uses tracking equipment to locate the individual based on the signal. 

  • Reduced Search Times:

This technology dramatically reduces search times, often from hours or days to minutes, increasing the likelihood of a safe recovery. 

Eligibility and Cost:

  • Eligibility:

The program is available for individuals prone to wandering due to conditions like Alzheimer’s, autism, or related developmental disabilities.

  • Caregiver Requirement:

A caregiver must live with the participant and be able to monitor the bracelet’s battery signal daily. 

  • Cost:

While there may be an initial cost for the transmitter and monthly fees for batteries, some counties offer financial assistance.
